Apple's First Foldable iPhone Is Up for Preorder, Starting at $1,999
The iPhone Duo ships October 23rd with Touch ID instead of Face ID, the same chip as the iPhone 18 Pro, and a handful of carrier discounts worth checking before you buy.

Apple's first foldable phone is official, and you can now hand over your money for one. The iPhone Duo, unveiled at Apple's "Surprise and shine" event alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and new Apple Watch models, is open for preorder at $1,999 for the 256GB version, with a release date of Friday, October 23rd, according to The Verge.
That price confirms what most people assumed: Apple's version of a book-style foldable isn't cheap, and it's arriving years after Samsung and others normalized the category. But Apple's approach comes with its own set of tradeoffs and quirks that set it apart from the rest of the foldable field.
Start with the screens. The Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display for quick glances and one-handed use, then unfolds into a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR panel for the full tablet-like experience. Apple Pencil support is on the way, though not at launch — it's coming later this year, per the report.
The bigger surprise is what's missing: Face ID. Instead, Apple put a Touch ID sensor along the device's edge, meaning you'll unlock the Duo with a fingerprint rather than a face scan. It's a notable departure for a company that's leaned on Face ID across its iPhone lineup for years, and it suggests the fold mechanism and inner display created engineering constraints that made a traditional Face ID array impractical here.
On durability, Apple went with Ceramic Shield 2 on the back and standard Ceramic Shield up front, plus an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance — Apple's usual bar for its flagship phones, now extended to a folding design.
Under the hood, the Duo runs the same A20 Pro chip found in the iPhone 18 Pro, so there's no compromise on raw performance for choosing the foldable form factor. The camera system tells a similar story: the Duo gets the same 48-megapixel fusion camera as the 18 Pro. The one exception is variable aperture, a feature on the 18 Pro's camera that didn't make it onto the Duo.
Color options are limited to two for now: Star White and Night Sky.
Where to buy it, and what carriers are offering
Preorders for the unlocked version are live now through Apple and Best Buy, ahead of next Friday's launch. If you're buying through a carrier, there are some trade-in deals worth weighing against the unlocked price.
AT&T is offering up to $1,200 off the Duo for new and existing customers who trade in an eligible device, spread across 36 monthly bill credits. Switch to AT&T and you can also get up to $800 back via a reward card to offset what you still owe on your current phone. On top of that, activating a new eligible line online can knock up to $200 per line off the price through those same 36-month bill credits.
T-Mobile's offer tops out at $1,000 off with an eligible trade-in on its Experience Beyond or Go5G Next plans. If you don't have a phone to trade in, you can still get the same $1,000 discount by adding a new line while switching from another carrier.
Verizon's pitch is simpler: no $40 activation fee for new customers who preorder, plus the option to pay $55.55 a month over 36 months at 0 percent APR. Verizon is also pushing a Simplicity Pro package at $72.22 a month that bundles the phone with perks like two extra TravelPass days monthly and the ability to upgrade your phone up to twice within a rolling 12-month window.
Whether any of those deals beat buying unlocked depends heavily on what you're trading in and which carrier you're already on — the trade-in credits, in particular, only pay out in full if your old device qualifies at the higher tiers. For now, the bigger story is simply that Apple's foldable era has a ship date, a price, and a fingerprint sensor where Face ID used to be.
