Samsung Teases Redesigned Z Fold 8 Through a Spider-Man Movie Trailer

A marketing tie-in for Spider-Man: Brand New Day gives fans their first glimpse of Samsung's rumored wider, passport-style foldable — even if lens flares do most of the hiding.

Samsung has found an unusual way to tease its next foldable phone: hiding it inside a trailer for a Spider-Man movie. The new footage for Spider-Man: Brand New Day includes a handful of shots of the web-slinger pulling a foldable phone off a 3D printer and cracking it open book-style, and Samsung is billing the device's look as a "brand new shape." Given the timing and the description, this is almost certainly the redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8, which has long been rumored to be moving toward a wider, passport-like form factor compared to the narrower, more elongated shape of past Z Fold models.

Don't expect a clear look, though. Every shot of the phone in Spider-Man's hands is washed out with heavy lens flare, the kind of cinematic effect that makes for a good trailer moment but tells you almost nothing about the actual industrial design. It's a teaser in the truest sense: enough to confirm a shape is coming, not enough to show what it actually looks like.

The same clip also shows Spider-Man 3D printing a fully functional Galaxy Z Flip 8, Samsung's next clamshell-style foldable. And according to 9to5Google, eagle-eyed viewers have spotted what appear to be additional unreleased Samsung products tucked into the footage: a Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, along with the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and a Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Unlike the deliberately obscured Fold shots, these devices are shown plainly, without any flare effects. The catch is that they're hard to distinguish from Samsung's current lineup. The flip phone in the trailer, for instance, looks essentially identical to the existing Galaxy Z Flip 7.

That's a telling detail in itself. It suggests Samsung is being far more careful about hiding the Z Fold 8's new design than it is about the rest of its upcoming lineup, reinforcing the idea that the shape change is the headline feature this generation, while the Flip line and other devices may see more incremental updates.

Why the shape matters

Samsung's Z Fold series has always favored a tall, narrow cover screen with a squarer full-size display when unfolded. Rumors have pointed to Samsung ditching that proportion in favor of something wider and shorter, closer to the aspect ratio of a passport, which would make the phone easier to use one-handed when folded and change how content is displayed when opened. It would be the most significant visual overhaul the line has had in years.

Samsung isn't the only company reportedly chasing this shape. Apple is rumored to be working on its own foldable iPhone with a similar design, and that device could arrive later this year. If both companies land on comparable proportions around the same time, it would mark a rare moment of the two biggest phone makers converging on the same foldable form factor, right as the category matures beyond its early, more experimental designs.

Samsung is expected to formally unveil the wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, alongside the rest of its refreshed device lineup, at a Galaxy Unpacked event scheduled for July 22nd. Until then, this Spider-Man tie-in is the closest thing fans have to an official look, blurry lens flares and all. It's a classic teaser move: give people just enough to start speculating, and let the actual reveal do the rest of the work.
