GTA 6 May Hit PC Just Months After Console Launch, Report Claims
If the timeline holds, Rockstar would be breaking sharply from its own history of making PC players wait years for its biggest releases.

Rockstar is reportedly planning to bring GTA 6 to PC in the first quarter of 2027, according to GamesBeat, which cited four anonymous sources familiar with the plans. Neither Rockstar nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has commented on the report.
If accurate, the gap between console and PC versions would be remarkably short. GTA 6 is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026, which would put a PC release only a few months behind. That's a sharp departure from the pattern Rockstar established with GTA 5, which didn't arrive on PC until nearly two years after its console debut. Plenty of fans had braced for a similarly long wait this time around.
Rockstar's track record backs up that expectation. Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, LA Noire, Max Payne 3 and Red Dead Redemption 2 all followed the same template: consoles first, PC later, sometimes much later. So a three-month turnaround, rather than a two-year one, would mark a real shift in how the studio treats its PC audience, even though that audience is substantial. GTA Online and the sprawling ecosystem of player-run role-play servers have made the PC version of GTA 5 a long-term phenomenon in its own right.
Why the timing might be different this time
One theory tying the pieces together involves GTA 6's multiplayer mode, which fans have taken to calling "GTA Online 2" in the absence of any official name from Rockstar. The studio hasn't confirmed an online component for GTA 6 at all, but Twitch CEO Dan Clancy said last month that the multiplayer mode, whatever it ends up being called, is expected to launch sometime next year. A faster PC release could be part of getting that online ecosystem up and running across platforms sooner rather than later, rather than Rockstar simply loosening its usual release cadence out of generosity.
Take-Two chief Strauss Zelnick has been consistently noncommittal whenever he's asked directly about a PC version of GTA 6, routinely deferring to Rockstar on the subject of announcements. In May, he told Bloomberg that Rockstar's strategy has always been to launch on console first, explaining the thinking this way:
"Always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you're judged by serving the core. Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn't there, if they're not served first and best, you kind of don't hit your other consumers."
That framing treats console players as the primary audience and PC as an extension, which lines up with how Rockstar has handled its last several major releases. But Zelnick has also acknowledged that the industry's center of gravity is shifting. About a year ago, he told CNBC's Squawk Box that gaming was moving toward PC and that the business overall was trending toward being "open rather than closed," a comment that reads differently in light of this new report. He's been asked point-blank before whether skipping PC for GTA 6 was a done deal, and has avoided giving a firm answer either way.
What's still unknown
Even if the Q1 2027 timeline holds, basic performance questions remain open. Rockstar hasn't said anything official about how GTA 6 runs on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, so there's no confirmed word on frame rate or resolution for either platform. Once a PC version does show up, the standard assumption applies: a sufficiently powerful rig should be able to push the game further than console hardware can, though without official specs for any version, that's still speculation rather than certainty.
For now, the GamesBeat report is just that: a report, built on unnamed sources, with Rockstar and Take-Two staying silent. But given the stakes around GTA 6's launch and the size of its PC fan base, any signal about a faster-than-usual PC rollout is going to travel fast. The real confirmation will have to come from Rockstar itself, and until then, the November 19 console launch remains the only date anyone can actually count on.
